How to travel around Cambodia

Cambodia is one of the most attractive destinations in Southeast Asia with numerous famous temples and beautiful landscapes. To meet the need of tourists traveling there, there are a lot of types of transport at the reasonable price. These are the most popular vehicles in Cambodia that you can choose to travel when taking Cambodia Indochina Tours.

Tuk-tuk is a rear-mounted tricycle that has a cabin behind. It is very famous in Asian countries – a public vehicle that is loved by the locals and tourists. Tuk-tuk runs at a slow speed, easily spleen through the streets ad every corner of the city.

Tips when traveling by tuk-tuk

Tuk-tuk is often used to serve the tourists, so it’s not hard to catch a tuk-tuk even you come to Cambodia at the first time.

Tuk-tuk drivers are good at finding customers. They will whistle or say “hello” when they see guests. However, if you are in need of tuk-tuk, you can make of sign of catching the car by placing an arm, palm down then shaking your fingers or wrists.

Tuk-tuk doesn’t have the metered machine like a taxi, so you should bargain the price before you get on the tuk-tuk. Most drivers can speak English well. If you think that the price is too expensive or unreasonable, you can take another one.

According to the tuk-tuk travel tip in Siem Reap, it’s about $1-$2 for a 1-3 km road and a tour to Angkor temple is about $15.

You should be careful with some drivers who seduce you to travel at a very cheap price then take you the grocery store in the tailor shop where they will force you a lot of pressure to buy something in order to get commissions from the store owners.

Tuk-tuk drivers are unaware of the name of roads or addresses where the visitors want to get. They just know more about the famous destinations. Therefore, if you want to go to temples or markets quickly, give them the name of the place, not the address.

You should take the tuk-tuk on the road, not the one standing in front of the hotels or tourist attractions because of the high price.

Tuk-tuk usually has open space and no screen, so you should keep your luggage and personal items carefully in case the bad guys rob them. You also should not use the camera or smartphone to take pictures or play games in the tuk-tuk while traveling.

Phnom Penh doesn’t have a public bus system, so tuk-tuk is still the most popular choice. However, if you want to travel to other cities such as Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, Bangkok or Saigon, you can look to various shipping companies such as Phom Penh Sorya Transport Company, G.S.T Express Bus Service, and Virak Buntham Express Travel.

Taxis are mostly concentrated in the Sisowath Quay area. It is not a popular means of transportation in Phnom Penh, partly because of the small number(not as many as Vietnam and Thailand), partly due to the need of the people (tuk-tuk is the most popular choice).

There are two types of taxi in Phnom Penh: metered taxi and non-metered taxi ( most of the taxis in Phnom Penh are non-metered taxis). If you take the non-metered taxi, you have to negotiate the price before you get on. Or you can ask for help from the reception of the hotel.

It’s about $8 – $10 for traveling from the airport to Phnom Penh center, $4- $5 for traveling around Phnom Penh. If you rent a taxi, it’s about $30- $35 for a day. The price can vary depending on the price of gas.

Not only in Vietnam, when traveling to Cambodia, you will encounter some cyclos running slowly on the road. However, this transport is not very popular in Cambodia.

Motorbike Taxi

Motorbike taxi is one of the most popular means of transportation for visitors. It’s convenient for those who travel alone. Besides negotiating the price before you get on the motorbike taxi, you should ask the driver to give you the helmet.

In Phnom Penh, a motorbike can carry more than one person.

The price when traveling from the airport to Phnom Penh center is about $5. The price is more expensive at night.

Rent motorbike or bicycle

The price for renting motorbike per day is about $9.
